Mixing Carrier Oils with Essential Oils

Mixing Carrier Oils with Essential Oils

Mixing carrier oils with essential oils is so darn easy! A simple process requiring some basic supplies and careful measurement. Here are the steps to follow:

Gather your supplies:
You will need a carrier oil, an essential oil (or oils), a dropper or measuring spoon, and a small beaker or container. You can explore our full range of carrier and essential oils on the earthYard website here.

Determine the proper ratio:
The correct ratio of essential oil drops to carrier oil will depend on the specific essential oils and carrier oils you are using, as well as your personal preference.
In general a good starting point is 3:100 ratio. For example, if you are using 100ml of jojoba oil, you could use 30 drops of essential oil. Alternatively, if you are using a smaller amount of Jojoba oil, such as 1 teaspoon (5ml), you could use 1.5 drops of essential oil. Keep in mind that some essential oils are more potent than others (like oregano and thyme) and you may need to lower the ratio.
Further there are some golden rules.

  • Never more than 3%,
  • Unless it’s a citrus oil especially those phytotoxic then use the 2% rule.
  • If formulating for bubbas under 3 years no more than 1% for anything.
  • The rule of percentage applies to the essential oil component as a whole in your mix or formula whether it be a single essential oil or a blend.
  • Remember – a little goes a long way when it comes to essential oils.

Overall the best ratio will depend on the specific oils you are using and your personal preference.

Mix the oils: Using a dropper or measuring spoon, measure out the appropriate amount of carrier oil and essential oil (according to the ratio you have chosen). Pour the oils into the beaker, bowl or container and mix well to combine.

Test the blend: Before using the blend on your skin, it is a good idea to test a small patch to make sure it is not irritating. Apply a small amount of the blend to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours to see if there is any redness, itching, or other irritation. If irritation occurs, consult the SDS on the product page for each of your ingredients used for the best remedy.

Use the blend: If the blend tests well, you can use it as desired. You can apply it directly to the skin, add it to a bath, or use it in a diffuser to disperse the scent into the air.

It is important to store the blend in a cool, dark place to preserve the potency of the essential oils and carrier oils. You can also label the container with the oils and the date to keep track of when you made the blend.

By following these steps, you can easily mix our range of earthYARD carrier oils with essential oils to create customized blends for use in aromatherapy and skincare.
